Free PR Tactic Pays Off

Tuesday August 19, 2003
Sharon Dotson of Bayou City Public Relations recently contributed an article about getting PR by sending letters to the editor—Want Some Good PR?

Well, as you may know, online networking is both my passion and my expertise, so I was pretty peeved when I read the article Is the net working for networking? Research says 'No' on Silicon.com. (Mind you, the problem was with the study, not with Silicon.com's reporting of it).

The study wasn't a study of networking on the net—it was a study showing that most business owners are still getting the majority of their business from networking, not from online activity. This was comparing "traditional internet marketing" (that's an oxymoron, isn't it?) to networking, NOT online networking to face-to-face networking. 95% of the people who are online still aren't networking online (most don't even know how). So this study was comparing apples and oranges.

So, following Sharon's advice, I wrote to the editor and told him so. Check out the results . . . The net does work for networking

Very effective, and certainly a lot easier than trying to pitch a story, that's for sure. So thanks, Sharon!
