The Surfers' Guide to Management: Strategies for Growing Businesses
Thursday February 12, 2004
How is entrepreneurship like surfing? Not a parallel that ever popped into my mind, but UK entrepreneurial expert Robert Craven, author of Customer Is King and Kick-Start Your Business says that great entrepreneurs are like great surfers, knowing how to take calculated risks and learning from their failures. (Yes, they surf in England... that was news to me, too!)
Unfortunately, says Craven, you don't get to learn entrepreneurial management skills in school. He doesn't mince words:
"Most textbook theories are inappropriate for growing businesses...Most of the recommended models of analysis are over thirty years old and their relevance and appropriateness to the average business unit must be questioned. The main complaint about the modern management texts is that management 'speaking in tongues' parades as science - the tools are not helpful - they are superficial, confusing and too theoretical."Read "The Surfers' Guide to Management: Strategies for Growing Businesses"
