Internet Entrepreneurs Dominate U.S. Small Business Landscape

Friday August 5, 2005
According to a recent survev by MasterCard International and Warrillow & Co., "web-driven entrepreneurs" now make up 25% of U.S. small business. Web-driven entrepreneurs are also more likely to be:
- Female than male
- Do business nationwide vs. just locally
- Read and publish blogs
- Focused on expansion

More and more of these businesses are doing much of their sales online. 31 percent of online small businesses reported that they do at least half of their sales transactions online.

Traditional small businesses average higher gross annual sales of $200,000, compared to $125,000 for online businesses. However, this is gross revenue, not profits, and also does not factor in the number of employees. Overhead is typically lower for online businesses, as is employee count. Not surprisingly, owners of both online and traditional small businesses feel that the use of technology is one of the areas of greatest opportunity to improve productivity and profitability.
