Bootstrapping Beyond the Bubble - Jay Flanzbaum of Online Gigs at SXSW

Wednesday March 15, 2006
I spent the better part of the past week at the SXSW Interactive Festival, where I had the pleasure to meet some of today's hottest new tech entrepreneurs. I figured this was a good excuse to start podcasting, so I brought along my handy Creative Zen Vision:M, which did an amazingly good job with its built-in microphone.

While I was waiting for the press desk to open, I started chatting with the guy at the table next to me. Wouldn't you know it - he turned out to be an entrepreneur! So we stepped out onto the patio, I pulled my Zen Vision:M out of my pocket, and within seconds we were recording the interview. How cool is that? (OK, I'm sure some of you veteran podcasters aren't especially amazed by that, but I still am.)

Jay Flanzbaum is the founder of Online Gigs, a web-based service that automates the booking and promotional process for bands, booking agents, record companies and music managers. Jay's background is as a music manager, not a technologist, and he has some great tips to share regarding running a tech company as a non-techie. He also offers insights into building a dot-com business in the post-tech-bubble economy. And we took a tangent to talk about the entrepreneurial side of the music business -- musicians, take heed!
