Online Ad Spending Growth Supports Paid Content

Monday July 17, 2006
I read in today's Online Media Daily that:
Online ad spending in the second quarter soared by 13.8 percent from the first three months of the year, according to a new study conducted by Deutsche Bank in conjunction with MediaPost. Pricing also increased, with the cost of premium inventory rising 6.6 percent, run of network inventory increasing 2.7 percent, and paid search edging up 1.3 percent quarter-over-quarter.
This means opportunity for entrepreneurs in the Web content space -- blogs, niche portals and social networking sites, etc., which are supported by ad revenue. Don't think that space is saturated -- it's not. The formula is pretty simple, really:
  1. Find a niche.
  2. Build an audience.
  3. Let advertisers pay you to reach that audience.
So why don't more people do it? I don't know... I really don't know. It takes an investment of about $30 to get your own domain and a year's hosting. Most hosting services now come with blog capabilities included. If you've got an interest in writing, why not at least explore it? You could just make a little bit of side money at it, or you could become a professional blogger.

So, how are the social networking sites like Myspace, Bebo, and Friendster run? This may be a big question, but basically, I just wonder how one goes about creating their own social networking site. Do you just pay a firm to host your site and design your site? Or do you buy your own servers, etc., if you expect the site to be big?
