Business Cards? More Important to Be Memorable

One of the topics of conversation that keeps popping up in the many entrepreneur discussion forums in which I participate is business cards. I have to admit that I'm not personally a big fan of business cards. I think of them as a sort of necessary evil, since I prefer to be paperless as much as possible. If you're going to have them, then I suppose you should make the most of them, but really, a simple business card works perfectly well, if you do the rest right.

What's "the rest"?

Have you ever attended a networking event, collected a bunch of business cards, and when you go through them the next day, you can't remember who many of them are? Or try to think of someone you met and had a conversation with, but you can't remember their name or their business to look them up?

Well, you certainly don't want to be one of those that other people can't remember, do you? It's fine to pass out business cards, but if people don't remember you well, they probably won't be calling you to follow up, and they certainly won't keep you in mind for their future needs or possible referrals.

Use the business card, but don't rely on it. In fact, if you don't make a memorable impression on your own, the card itself isn't going to help you much.
