My New Favorite Reading - Bruce Pilgrim's "Talking to My Cats"

Sunday June 10, 2007
It never ceases to amaze me that even though more than half of the world's work force is employed by small businesses, there's just not actually that much humor out there about small businesses and entrepreneurship. We have Dilbert, The Office, Office Space and so many other gems that take a humorous and slightly twisted, but not too far from the truth, view of corporate life. And jokes... well, there are hundreds of jokes about corporate life, especially "the boss", but not so many about small businesses.

So I was delighted today to see a headline in my daily newsfeed for a press release titled Smart, Sassy, Snide Look at Corporate Life and Running a Small Business: Talking to My Cats: A Small Business Journal. With a little bit of poking around, I found my way to the author's web site, BrucePilgrim.com, and his journal, "Talking to My Cats".

What a gem! This is some of the funniest, yet insightful and informative, writing on small business I have seen in a long time.

For a good sampling, check out a couple of my favorites so far: The Laws of Lunch and Void Where Prohibited. I also found his latest post very informative: Twenty Bucks, Period, which looks at the history behind the pricing of items at $19.99 or $19.95 rather than an even $20 and his rationale for pricing his new book at an even $20. I'll be enjoying reading the rest of "Talking to My Cats" for days to come.

Oh, by the way -- Bruce (and everyone else) - don't use frames on your web site!!! See, I really would like to link directly to Talking to My Cats, but if I do, I send people to a page that doesn't have navigation to the rest of the site. Frame-based navigation makes it difficult for people to deep link directly to resources on your site, which in turn reduces the number of people who link to you, period.

Also, using a blog to publish the journal instead of static web pages would increase their visibility, allow people to comment, keep people engaged with a monthly touch via RSS or e-mail, etc. No one ever said you have to post to your blog several times a week.

Scott:

Thanks for your kind words and advice.

I started the “Talkin to My Cats” journal back in 2001 to remind my contacts that I am still out there. I’ve gotten any number of gigs as a result.

As far as the use of frames, I had to settle for that because the person who set up my website was doing it for free. Right now, I am in the process of having the site re-designed, and the frames issue will go away.

I’m working on a blog as well.

I’ll keep you posted.

Bruce
