Gather.com Will Pay You to Post Your Pics

By June 18, 2007

Those of you who've been reading my site for a while know that I'm a big fan of social networking sites. My latest addiction hangout is Gather.com. There are two reasons I love Gather:
  1. Great content. Gather focused on appealing to writers and has attracted a number of excellent writers, including a large number of published authors, to the site.
  2. Revenue sharing. Unlike most of the popular sites built on user-generated content, Gather shares its ad revenues with the content producers and active members who generate all those page views and click on all those ads. You earn points for most of your activities - a trivial amount for posting a comment or rating an article, more for writing articles that get well read and well rated. You can use the points earned to purchase gift certificates ranging from luxuries like cruises and Omaha Steaks to the immensely practical Home Depot. If you earn enough points you can get cash instead.
You aren't going to make a living on Gather. But if you love social networking and reading good content, and especially if you are a writer looking for outlets for your content, you definitely want to check out Gather, as you can get some nice rewards back for your participation.

There is a promo going on right worth noting called "Picture More Points". Through the end of June, Gather is giving members 10 points for every photo uploaded to the site (that you took - not reposting photos by other people). Each point is worth $0.016, which makes each photo worth $0.16. I figured if you already have the photos ready and all you have to do is upload them and tag them, you can probably earn about $8-$10 an hour. Not great money, but easy money if you already have the pictures. You'll also earn more points if people view and comment on your photos and rate them highly. Just remember the idea of reciprocity - if you want people to view and vote on your photos, do the same for others.

I can't post my affiliate link to invite you to join (conflict of interest policy - too bad for me since you get points for inviting people), so just visit Gather to sign up on your own. Feel free, though, to look me up and connect once you're there.

UPDATE 5/21 - Gather is now giving out $20 Borders gift cards if you invite 5 people who join. Now that's easy money!

He, someone from Gather on about.com . Very cool And you gave us some details about the worth of points that I didn’t know. Will have to look for your spot on Gather. I am already a memeber as I have stated. Earning $8 to $10 an hour to upload photos sounds high to me, guess I am slow I have to resize all my pictures for Gather first before I post them .

isn’t $0.160 16 cents? not $0.016 it sounds like if I upload 10 pictures i’d get 16 cents.

It’s $0.016 per point, not per photo. Each photo is worth 10 points, so each photo is worth 10 * $0.016 = $0.16. 10 photos would be $1.60. I’ve tested it and I can do a photo in 1:10 seconds if I’m set up right — about 50 an hour. That’s $8 an hour. Where does the extra come from? You get a few additional points for people viewing and rating your photos as well.

Vinay, et al. — 1 point per photo, i.e., $0.016, is their normal rate now. In June 2007 they ran a promotion offering 10 points per photo.
