America's Founding Entrepreneurs

Wednesday July 4, 2007
We often think of America's presidents as career politicians, and disproportionate number of them have been attorneys. But did you know that, if you include those who were professional farmers and those who were attorneys in private practice, nearly half of U.S. presidents have a background as business owners? Learn more about America's Entrepreneurial Presidents.

Another one of America's founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, was quite the entrepreneur, as well as a statesman. While we may all still have childhood images implanted in our mind of Franklin standing out in the rain flying a kite with a key on the string, in fact he started out as a printer, and eventually became publisher of the popular Poor Richard's Almanac. He was also a prolific inventor, whose creations included swim fins, bifocals, a glass harmonica, watertight bulkheads for ships, the lightning rod, an odometer, and the wood stove (called the Franklin stove). Learn more about Benjamin Franklin from our Inventors Guide, Mary Bellis.

Have a happy July 4th!
