3 Big Lists Entrepreneurs Should Bookmark

Friday August 17, 2007
Search engines are great for finding things that are hard to find. They're not always so great at giving you a fairly comprehensive list of resources on a particular topic. Web directories like Yahoo! Directory and Open Directory Project (aka DMOZ) were supposed to do that, but since sites have to pay to be in the Yahoo! Directory and the submission process for DMOZ is notoriously slow and difficult, neither has done a very good job of providing very current lists. Plus, there's only limited editorial filtering -- any legitimate site can get into the directory.

Enter the blog list post. A blog list post is a list of resources around a particular theme, hand-picked by the blogger(s). There are a two types of posts, the focused list, which I tend to write more of, and the big list. Focused lists help busy people start exploring a topic time-efficiently, while big lists help you research more in-depth.

The following are three great big lists that I've bookmarked recently and am slowly but surely making my way through:

The Business Blogging Toolset: 100 Resources for Entrepreneur-Writers - The Bootstrapper blog has compiled a list of tools and sites specifically oriented for people who are either blogging to promote their business or blogging to make money. The list includes ten sites in each of ten categories:

  1. Blogging Platforms
  2. Design and Content
  3. Marketing
  4. Blogs About Blogging
  5. Blogs About Business Blogging
  6. Blogging Forums and Networking
  7. Search Engines
  8. Statistics and Analysis
  9. Money Making Tools
  10. Miscellaneous Tools
You know, I keep up with this space pretty well, and probably half the sites on here were either new to me or I was aware of them but hadn't explored them yet.

The 100 Daily Must-Reads for Entrepreneurs - I've written before about my Top 10 Most Practical Blogs for Entrepreneurs (I think you'll find almost all of them on this list). If you'd like to expand your blog reading more, this is an excellent place to start. Bootstrapper blog has again broken them down into ten categories:

  1. Raising Capital
  2. Managing Debt and Risks
  3. Managing Staff
  4. Venture Capitalists
  5. Productivity
  6. Small Business
  7. General Interest
  8. Marketing
  9. Young Entrepreneurs
  10. Startups

100+ Ways to Make Money Online - It really is easy to make money online. It's just a little harder to make enough money online to justify your time, and harder still to make a full-time living at it. Most people making money online are doing so from multiple sources. To give you an idea just how broad the possibilities are, this list from Mashable is broken down into several categories:

  1. Get Paid To Write
  2. Advertising Programs
  3. Affiliate Networks and Programs
  4. Paid Social Media Programs
  5. Everything Else That Pays
