Don't Let People Tell You "You Can't"

Reader Submissions: Tell Your Entrepreneurship Story

From Lloyd V. Wales

What I Did:

I started my business in 1998-99. I was working at a prior business and I finally just had it so I quit my job. I went out on my own and started my own small trucking/hot shot business in the Rocky Mountains. I didn't look back. I just went for the gusto. I gave it my all. I was willing to lose everything and didn't care. I just went all the way...

How I Did It:

I started to make cold sales calls to my future customers. I went out day after day. I kept on persisting going back even knowing that I wasn't getting work from them. I eventually started to get work from some clients. Then they saw how we were willing to do business with them and the way we did business. It eventually turned into a great big boom situation. It just exploded into greater and greater things.

Lessons Learned

Some tips I learned that I would like to share with other people are: don't ever give up on what you believe in. Don't ever give up on your dreams. And don't ever, I repeat ever, listen to what other people say; especially the people that have not ever done it. Not to brag but I always, always turned my head and told people that didn't understand what they were talking about, to not to worry, it's my future not theirs. I was able to sell my business after eight short years. I had such a great clientele that all I sold was my business name no assets no equipment, nothing but a name that was worth $265,000.

Mitchell York, Entrepreneurs Guide, says:

Lloyd, this is inspirational. I am totally a believer in not letting other people tell you what you can and can't do (just ask my mother!). Congrats on getting to the finish line.
