What is your side business?

My name is Grant Harris and I am Owner and Chief Style Consultant at Image Granted, LLC a Washington, DC Image Consulting company dedicated to solving the complex image, style & fashion issues of today's professional man. We provide style & wardrobe consultations, personal shopping services, closet organization and other value-based services. Our goal is to provide practical and affordable advice to dress men for the life they want.

Why did you choose this particular business?

I chose the field because I have always had a passion for presenting myself well, but I just never knew I could turn into a business. My family is heavily involved in style and fashion and after working with a business coach several years ago I came across the Image Consulting industry. When I heard about what Image Consultants do and how they work I knew it was the career for me. I immediately contacted every consultant in the DC area I could and spoke with them personally. I wrote business plan in two weeks, worked in a 16 week internship, started a blog, and have been successful ever since.

I do not intend to turn this into a full-time business until I am able to at least match my current income. But the way I see it I can have my cake and eat it too by having the security of a full-time job and the extra income of a side business.

Advice

  • Validate your idea. Talk to other experts and non-experts. If others can't see the value in what you're doing don't quit your day job.
  • don't reinvent the wheel. If there is already a process or procedure in place, follow the model and build on it with your unique skills and talents.
  • Ask for help. No entrepreneur was ever successful without help.
  • Be humble. No entrepreneur who ever was successful and STAYED successful did so by being full of themselves.
  • Stay grounded in your faith. There will be times when your emotions, intellect, physical body will all be tested. this is when faith steps in.

Mitchell York, Entrepreneurs Guide, says:

I like the advice about validation. Too many people go into the entrepreneurial breach blindly, chasing a dream. While some are successful, most hit a wall because they are creating solutions in search of problems. Then again, that's why Apple is the most valuable tech company in the world...
